Ensenada sometimes gets marketed as a destination for wine tasting, tacos, fishing and romantic weekends — and it certainly does all of those things very well. But if you're traveling as a family, there's another side of Ensenada that doesn't get nearly enough attention.
There are beaches to explore, animals to see, boats to ride, horses to ride, trampolines to jump on, zip lines to fly across, science exhibits to discover and enough water activities to exhaust even the child who somehow still has energy at 9:30 at night.
And then there is perhaps the greatest family attraction of all:
Doing absolutely nothing at a beach house while the kids play in the sand.

1. Let the Kids Loose at Xplora Playgrounds
If you're traveling with younger children, Xplora is one of those places worth keeping in your back pocket.
It's an indoor children's playground in Ensenada where kids can climb, slide, crawl, explore and generally burn through a remarkable amount of energy.
And because it's indoors, it's also an excellent option when the weather isn't cooperating or when everyone has had enough sun for the day.
Parents traveling with small children know that not every vacation activity needs to involve sightseeing. Sometimes you simply need somewhere the kids can play for a couple of hours while the adults sit down.
Xplora is particularly useful if you're traveling with toddlers and younger elementary-age children.
Good for: Younger kids, toddlers and rainy or cooler days.
2. Jump Around at Flyers Trampoline Park
There comes a moment on almost every family vacation when the adults want a margarita and the children inexplicably want to run a marathon.
Enter Flyers.
Flyers is an indoor trampoline park in Ensenada — and, importantly during warmer weather, it has air conditioning.
Kids can jump, climb and burn off some energy while parents get a break from organizing another sightseeing expedition.
It's particularly good if you're traveling with school-age children or teenagers and want something completely different from beaches and sightseeing.
Think of it as strategic parenting disguised as a vacation activity.
Good for: Kids with WAY too much energy, older children and teenagers.
3. Spend a Full Adventure Day at Las Cañadas
If you only choose one major kid-centered excursion during your Ensenada vacation, Las Cañadas deserves serious consideration.
This isn't simply a water park.
It's more like someone asked a group of children what they wanted to do on vacation and then built all of it in one place.
There is a wave pool, interactive water fountain, pirate fort, lake with pedal boats, farm, horseback riding and ATV rentals. And for adventurous older kids and adults, there's also a canopy tour.
The canopy course itself consists of five zip lines and five different suspension bridges, making this much more of an adventure than simply sliding into a swimming pool.
Las Cañadas is the sort of place where you should plan to spend most of the day rather than trying to squeeze it between other activities.
Bring swimsuits, sunscreen and a change of clothes — and accept that everyone is probably going to sleep very well that night.
Good for: Pretty much the entire family.
4. Visit the Zoo in the Middle of Valle de Guadalupe
Yes, you read that correctly.
There's a zoo in Ensenada's wine country.
Zoológico Parque del Niño Jersey is located in Francisco Zarco in the Valle de Guadalupe.
This makes it particularly interesting for families because it solves one of the classic Baja vacation dilemmas:
The parents want to explore Valle de Guadalupe. The kids have absolutely no interest in discussing Cabernet Sauvignon.
Problem solved.
You can make Parque Jersey part of a family day in the Valle and then combine it with lunch or another stop in wine country.
The park isn't simply about walking past animal enclosures either. Depending on what's operating during your visit, the experience can include other family activities and recreational areas.
It makes Valle de Guadalupe much easier to incorporate into an Ensenada family itinerary instead of assuming you have to skip wine country completely because you're traveling with children.
Good for: Families who want to experience Valle de Guadalupe without boring the kids senseless.

5. Take a Harbor Cruise and Look for Marine Life
One of the easiest ways to turn an ordinary afternoon into an adventure for children is to put them on a boat.
Head down to Ensenada's harbor and take a tour around the bay.
Kids can see the city from the water, watch the fishing boats and commercial ships, look for sea lions and birds, and potentially spot other marine wildlife.
During whale migration season, Baja California becomes even more interesting.
Even outside whale season, however, simply getting onto the water is fun — particularly for children who haven't spent much time around boats.
For larger or more organized excursions, Sergio's Sportfishing is one local option. There are also smaller local operators such as Botes Juanitos.
If your children are older, you could even turn the boat trip into a family fishing adventure.
Good for: All ages, especially wildlife-loving kids.
6. Visit El Caracol Science Museum
Vacation doesn't have to mean the children stop learning.
We just prefer when they don't realize they're doing it.
Caracol Museo de Ciencias is Ensenada's science museum and a great change of pace from the outdoor activities that dominate most Baja vacations.
Its focus on science and the natural world makes it particularly appropriate for curious kids, and it's another useful option to keep available for a cloudy day or when everyone needs some time out of the sun.
It's also conveniently located in Ensenada, making it easy to combine with exploring downtown, the harbor or lunch in town.
Good for: Curious kids, elementary-age children and families needing an indoor day.

7. Fly Through Baja on a Canopy Tour
Have an adventurous kid who thinks walking around looking at things is not technically an activity?
Try a canopy tour.
Desert Nest offers another adventure option around Ensenada for families looking for zip lines and outdoor excitement.
Flying above the Baja landscape is a pretty dramatic change from your average family vacation activity and can be especially memorable for older kids and teenagers.
As with any adventure activity, age, height or weight requirements can change, so check directly with the operator before promising the kids they're going zip-lining.
Because once you've told a ten-year-old they're going on a zip line, there is no putting that genie back in the bottle.
Good for: Adventurous older children and teenagers.
8. Go Horseback Riding on the Beach
There are beach vacations.
And then there are vacations where your child gets to ride a horse along a Baja beach.
Those tend to be remembered a little longer.

9. Spend the Day on the Beach
Sometimes we make family vacations far more complicated than they need to be.
Kids + sand + ocean = remarkably effective entertainment.
Pack some towels, beach toys, sunscreen, snacks and a football or Frisbee and let the Pacific handle the itinerary.
Build sandcastles.
Look for shells.
Play soccer.
Dig an unnecessarily enormous hole.
Watch the waves.
Have lunch outside.
Then watch the sunset.

Bubble waffles are essentially what happens when someone looks at an ordinary waffle and decides it isn't sufficiently ridiculous.
Add ice cream and toppings and you've got something children are going to remember — and probably photograph before eating.
It's also an easy little activity when you don't want another half-day excursion.
Sometimes vacation memories come from the big adventures.

11. Visit La Bufadora
You can't really make a list of family activities in Ensenada without including La Bufadora.
Located south of Ensenada on the Punta Banda peninsula, La Bufadora is one of the area's best-known natural attractions.
Ocean water is forced into a sea cave and shoots dramatically upward through the rocks.
Kids generally enjoy two parts of the experience:
Watching the blowhole erupt...
…and watching unsuspecting people stand too close to it.
The road and walkway toward La Bufadora are also lined with vendors selling food, candy, souvenirs and all sorts of things you absolutely did not intend to buy until your child saw them.
Try some churros, browse the stalls and make an afternoon of it.
One tip: the strength of La Bufadora varies with ocean conditions and tides, so every visit is a little different.
12. Teach the Kids to Surf
You are on the Pacific coast of Baja California.
Eventually someone should get on a surfboard.
Ensenada and the surrounding coastline have a long surfing culture, and there are beaches suitable for different ability levels.
For older children and teenagers, arranging a beginner surf lesson can be one of the coolest activities of the trip.
And no, they don't have to become good at it.
Standing up for approximately four seconds before spectacularly falling into the Pacific still counts.
Parents can participate too — although children discovering they're better at surfing than Mom or Dad after 45 minutes is an occupational hazard.
13. Explore Ensenada's Malecón
Not every outing needs reservations.
Take a walk along Ensenada's waterfront and harbor area.
You'll see fishing boats, cruise ships when they're in port, vendors, restaurants and plenty of people coming and going.
Grab a snack or ice cream, walk around, watch the boats and enjoy being in the city without needing an elaborate itinerary.
It's also easy to combine the Malecón with a harbor cruise, science museum visit or lunch.
For families, those flexible half-days are often the ones that keep a vacation from becoming exhausting.
14. Take the Kids on a Baja Taco Challenge
Here's some important cultural education:
Children need to understand that tacos are not merely dinner.
They're a lifestyle.
Turn lunch into a family taco challenge.
Try fish tacos.
Then shrimp tacos.
Carne asada.

Ensenada is particularly famous for its Baja-style fish tacos, so this is one local experience we'd consider mandatory.

This may actually be our favorite recommendation.
Don't plan anything.

Everyone is exhausted by 5.
You're on vacation.
Pick one day and deliberately schedule nothing.
Make breakfast at the house.
Let the kids wander down to the beach.
Read.
Play cards.
Have lunch outside.
Take a nap.
Open some Baja wine.
Go back to the beach.
Grill dinner.
Watch the sun disappear into the Pacific.
Those quiet days frequently become the days families remember most.
What About Valle de Guadalupe With Kids?
Absolutely.
You do not need to abandon Valle de Guadalupe simply because you're traveling as a family.
The trick is not planning an adult wine-tasting marathon and expecting a six-year-old to appreciate the terroir.
Choose one or two family-friendly stops, have a long lunch, visit Parque Jersey, explore the scenery and give the children something to look forward to as well.
Remember that Valle de Guadalupe is more than tasting rooms. It's countryside, restaurants, farms, animals, outdoor spaces and some of Baja California's most beautiful scenery.
With the right itinerary, parents get their Valle day and the kids don't spend six hours asking:
"Can we go now?"
Everybody wins.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Ensenada With Kids?
You can certainly visit Ensenada for a weekend, but families often enjoy it more when they aren't trying to cram everything into 48 hours.
For three nights, we'd keep things simple: beach time, downtown Ensenada and La Bufadora.
With four or five nights, add Valle de Guadalupe, a boat trip, horseback riding or one of the children's attractions.
With a week, you can really settle into Baja mode.
Spend some days exploring and others doing absolutely nothing.
That's when Ensenada starts feeling less like a weekend destination and more like a proper vacation.
Where to Stay in Ensenada With Kids
Where you stay makes an enormous difference when traveling with children.
Hotels are convenient for a night or two.
But for a family vacation, having multiple bedrooms, a kitchen, living areas and direct access to the beach changes the experience completely.
